Start of door panel body work

By |2024-03-20T10:48:50-05:00March 16th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

With the rust holes patched, I started putting some layers of body putty on which extended to the front fender ding. While that dried, I removed the door handle and keyhole. The keyhole only has a clip holding it in place and it pops right out. The door handle has two small bolts (I believe 5/16” or 11/32”). It is [...]

Patching small rust holes in passenger door with JB weld

By |2024-03-20T10:48:05-05:00March 15th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

Of course the preferred professional way is to cut out rusty thin sheet metal that has holes. I thought of trying something different. I cleaned out the rust, painted the inside with rust oleum rust and seal, then sealed up the small rust holes on the passenger door panel with JB weld. I even pushed in fiberglass mixed in with [...]

Rust work on passenger door + starting fix for fender

By |2024-03-20T10:46:49-05:00March 14th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

I realized there was a high spot in the new front passenger fender that was dented outward. Not sure if it came like that or was a result of me bending the inner flap away from the door. The door edge was lightly rubbing on the inner sheet metal flap when I opened to door so I bent it slightly [...]

Finish welding passenger quarter panel inside door jam to structural backing plate

By |2024-03-20T10:44:47-05:00March 12th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

From over 10 years ago, I never finished the weld inside the door jam of the passenger quarter panel. There is a thicker backing plate that gives the quarter panel more structural support when the door is shut. Before it wobbled slightly when shutting the door. To finished this, I drilled several holes into the door jam area, then clamped [...]

Lining up trunk lid + cleaning rust

By |2024-03-12T23:18:04-05:00March 10th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

Today was all about the trunk lid. I’m not sure if the new quarter panels didn’t line up perfect but I believe the trunk lid was always sticking up about a 1/4” on the corner. I was going to grind down the metal plate that attached to the inside of the trunk lid because it seemed thick enough. But instead [...]

Completed rear panel repair + primed

By |2024-03-12T22:46:09-05:00March 8th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

I sanded the last layer of body putty spread but still realized 2 spots that were slightly low. Another layer was added and sanded today to finally complete this. I was debating if it I should’ve just replaced this panel and weld in a new one. I’d guess the amount of time and effort to weld in a new panel [...]
