Roughly sanded the hardtop dents and filled with body putty

By |2024-02-26T22:05:48-05:00January 26th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

I tried my best to hammer the large dents back with no luck. So I proceeded to fill them in with body putty. There was quite a lot of back and forth between applying more coats and sanding . Like always, I ended up needing to sand a much wider area to feather it out smooth. Someone with more experience [...]

Removing Vinyl adhesive from hardtop

I had mixed feelings on the vinyl lined hardtop that this model firebird came factory with but I decided to remove it. Everyone has their own preference. In my option, I didn’t like it because: it didn’t look modern it looked like a faux convertible that was trying to be something it wasn’t it was more prone to rust at [...]

Sandblast rust on front fender extension, front valance panel, then body fill pits

By |2024-02-22T14:50:20-05:00January 19th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

I used the sandblaster on the front fender extensions because it was a bit rusted. Then I used body filler to fill in the pits that the rust made. I now realize it is best to just buy replacement parts for these because they are only about $40 each. The front valance panel had some surface rust also. I used [...]

Installed passenger fender and hood

By |2024-02-22T00:17:32-05:00January 17th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

The passenger fender was installed a week or two earlier. Then I cleaned up under the hood and brushed on the rust oleum gloss black oil based paint. I read online that some folks mixed in a hardener to make it just about as good as products like chassis saver. But then I also read that hardener is not needed [...]

Cleaning and painting rust under the passenger fender

By |2024-02-22T00:23:36-05:00January 6th, 2024|68' Firebird project|0 Comments

The best paint imo for rust and making non body panel surfaces cleaned up is Chassis Saver. Instead of driving around town for it, I tried rust oleum rust and reform. It seems decent but I later switch to regular ole black rust oleum oil based paint. For the price, the oil based product doesn’t seem much worse than chassis [...]
